Sequoyah Tournament

On Friday, August 13th, the Blessed Trinity Varsity Volleyball Team arrived to Etowah High School to compete in the Sequoyah Tournament. They won both games on Friday, and went to go get some rest to arrive back the next morning to work hard. They won three more matches, making it to the championship game of their gym. This tournament was going on in four different gyms, and the winners of these gyms came together for the championships of the entire tournament. In the past 6 years in Blessed Trinity Volleyball, the team had NEVER made it out of their gym, but these Lady Titans were determined to make history, and they did. The girls beat Chattahoochee High School in three sets, making it to Sequoyah High School to play in the semi-finals. The played Sandy Creek High School, which is a very good team with a good volleyball program throughout the school, but these girls had heart, and they showed just how hard they could work to become champions. The Blessed Trinity Varsity Volleyball Team had made it to the finals. They played Pope High School, who is a 5AAAAA school and the defending state champions of their division. Blessed Trinity won the first game 25-20, making school history. Pope came back though, and beat them in the next two games. Blessed Trinity had lost, but they were one of the THREE teams who had taken a game from Pope. Overall this tournament was a complete success. The girls proved to Coach Stevens, Coach Murphy, and to each other, that they can, and will, become champions.
In the video below you will get to see some of the ways the Blessed Trinity Volleyball Team practices and learn some of the fundamentals of the sport that they play.

Wesleyn Scrimmage

All summer long, the Blessed Trinity varsity volleyball team has been working hard to get better, in order to have a successful season. They had been going to two weight training sessions a week, and two open gym practices a week, all summer long. The girls had clearly gotten better throughout the course of the summer. Now it was time to show everyone just how hard they had been working. The day that all of them found out they had made the team, they had practice. The girls quickly and easily bonded, so now all they had to do was their best. On Tuesday, August 10th, at 5:00 p.m., it was a battlefield. Defending State Champions, Wesleyan High School, came to play, and they were not going down without a fight. Tons of fans filled up the gymnasium to come support their Lady Titans, and to come watch the game begin. The first game, Blessed Trinity dominated. The second game, Wesleyan began to get a little fed up with all of their enthusiasm and love for the game, so they started working harder. You could tell that Wesleyan really wanted to win, but Blessed Trinity wanted it more. The Titans still remained and stole the second set. By the third set, we had worn out the other team so much that we kept them in single digits. We proved to Wesleyan, our school, and to each other that with God and all of us coming together, nothing could slow us down.

Coach Caitlyn Murphy

Coach Murphy is an excellent coach. She is constantly making the girls laugh and is always supporting them no matter what situation they are in. She has been coaching for five years at Blessed Trinity. Before she came here, he played high school volleyball for Marist. She was their starting setter for three years in a row, leading her team to win three state championships. Her senior year, her team's record was 58-0, an almost impossible score. Caitlyn Murphy owns two state setting records and is in Top-10 all time setting categories. She also won Georgia High School Player of the Year two years in a row, and in 1999, she won Gatorade Player of the Year. Obviously, Coach Murphy has a lot of experience playing volleyball, so she is an excellent role model for all of the girls to look up to. She pushes the team even when it is tough, and she loves all the girls so much. With her on the sidelines at every game helping them, they are sure to do their best.

Coach Paul Stevens

All of the girls on this team really lucked out with the coaches they were all blessed with. Their head coach, Coach Paul Stevens, has been coaching at Blessed Trinity for eight years. He has been coaching volleyball for fifteen years. Before he started coaching for Blessed Trinity,  he was the assistant coach at Marist for seven years, which has a successful volleyball program as well. He has lead the Blessed Trinity volleyball team to three state championships, one of which he won in 2006. Coach Stevens has a wife named Genevieve, and they have three children: Bryan, Michelle, and Matthew. Paul Stevens has a lot of experience coaching volleyball. He is constantly encouraging the girls to do their best and to work hard no matter what. With him by their side, this team is unstoppable.

The Team

At tryouts for Blessed Trinity's varsity volleyball team, thirty girls came out to play. After long and exhausting tryouts, only twelve came out on top. It was a very stressful for all of these girls but in the end they made it through. This team has unbelievable talent from left to right. The captains of the team are Ali McAlvany and Megan Makuck. Both of these girls are seniors with incredible leadership. Many teams come to play in the 2AA/1A division, but few teams have what Blessed Trinity has. This team has hard work, determination, unity, talent, enthusiasm, and most importantly, each other. This team has a lot to offer and all twelve of them will have an excellent season this year.
